LINK WITH THE PAST – Hacienda heritage of Old California is recaptured
in recently completed modern ranch estate, Palos Verdes, designed by Cliff
May. Using a traditional open plan, the
house is low, squat and rambling, giving the impression, even when new, of a
comfortable maturity. For enduring
resistance to conflagration hazards, red cedar shakes covering entire roof were
pressure treated with “NCX” fire-retardant formulation, from Koppers Company,
Inc. NCX is a registered Koppers
SCULPTURAL IMPACT – In keeping with structural scale,
red cedar shakes covering roof of modern ranch estate, designed by Cliff May,
were applied in multiple courses -- four layers at edges and three elsewhere,
providing a subtle interplay of light and shadow. Shakes were pressure treated with “NCX”
fire-retardant formulation, from Koppers Company, Inc., for resistance to
conflagration hazards. Natural aging
qualities of red cedar shakes are unaffected by the treatment. NCX is a registered Koppers trademark.
